What is Registration?

At the beginning of each rugby season your Provincial Rugby Union Referee Education Officer will ask you to complete a NZRU Rugby Referee Registration Form.  These forms are usually issued at your local RugbySmart Injury Prevention presentation.  By completing the registration form you will be registered as a rugby referee in New Zealand for that rugby season.

Benefits of Being Registered

Being registered ensures that you are recognised for your efforts and are supported by your local Provincial Rugby Union and the New Zealand Rugby Union.  The New Zealand Rugby Union often show their appreciation to registered volunteers by sending special offers such as priority access to tickets for AllBlacks test matches.

Registered rugby members are also covered under the New Zealand Rugby Union Personal Accident Insurance.

What Happens to Your Information?

The information on your registration form is entered into a secure national rugby membership database managed by your local Provincial Rugby Union.  The database is used for rugby administration purposes and your details can only be viewed by your Referee Association, your local Provincial Rugby Union, and the New Zealand Rugby Union.

Your details may also be used by the sponsors of rugby, unless you identified on your registration form that you do not wish to receive promotional or sponsors material.

The New Zealand Rugby Union and your local Provincial Rugby Union also use the database to analyse referee numbers for developing initiatives to further support refereeing in New Zealand.

Signing the Form

You are required to sign your own registration form so that you are protected under the New Zealand Privacy Act.

How to Register

You will be required to complete a New Zealand Rugby Referee Registration paper form at the compulsory Small Blacks refereeing or Rugby Smart Injury Prevention courses run by your Provincial Union.

Online Registration

Some rugby clubs and schools have signed up to online rugby registration where players and administrators/volunteers can register online instead of completing the paper registration form.

If your club or school is providing online registration this year, you will be unable to register as a coach or referee online. You need to attend the compulsory courses run by your Provincial Union as outlined above.
