Ponsonby Rugby Club - Director of Rugby

The Ponsonby Rugby club is a long established and successful rugby club. It is renowned in Auckland, New Zealand and internationally for its success and for the way the club and its diverse make-up is integrated into the local community. The club was founded in 1874 and has produced more All Blacks and other International players than any other club in New Zealand. It has also won the Gallaher Shield, the symbol of rugby supremacy in Auckland, more than twice as many times as any other club.

The aim of the club is to provide a family environment to foster the game, where players can learn skills, make friendships and grow a lifelong love for the game – including learning the responsibilities of being a contributing club member.

The club is located in the Auckland Council’s Western Springs facility in central Auckland. In recent years the surrounding suburbs have continued to see a major change to their demographic and as a consequence the number of school age children in the local population has increased dramatically. This in turn has led to a dramatic increase in the number of registered children playing rugby at the club. The club has more than tripled in junior playing numbers since 2007. This season we fielded 56 junior teams with approximately 900 players. We also fielded 13 Senior teams with approximately 400 players.

The part time role of Director of Rugby directs the club rugby programmes to support key stakeholders (players, coaches, administrators and external supporters), liaising with external stakeholders Auckland Rugby Union and Auckland Council to promote and implement initiatives that will increase recruitment, retention, development and performance of rugby at the club.

Desirable characteristics of the successful candidate include but are not limited to recent coaching and playing experience, ability to fulfil appropriate strength and conditioning programming for players, experience in the professional rugby environment of today, strong communication skills through all modern mediums, the ability to effectively engage with players, volunteers and key stakeholders alike.

A position description may be obtained on request. Applications can be made in confidence to by Friday 26th September 2014.
