Since its formation in 1921, the Waikato Rugby Union has developed the game of rugby at all levels within the province, responding in times of significant change to retain an ethos of performance and commitment, while playing an important role in the community.

A new leader is sought to work closely with the Board to continue this bloodline and deliver growth to ensure the long-term viability of the Union.

This role reports to the Waikato Rugby Union Board via the Chairman. A team of 17 staff through five direct reports support the General Manager in the operational delivery of Rugby, Operations, Commercial, Finance and Marketing objectives.

The demands of professional sport and associated critical commercial and community relationships means the General Manager must have a special blend of leadership skills and commercial strength. These skills are likely to come from proven successful leadership of a sports-based organisation (preferably Rugby) or from a small-to-medium sized commercial business.

Other requirements include:

  • Demonstrated competence in financial management: budget-setting, cost-control and financial review
  •  Proven capability to develop realistic and meaningful business values and lead and inspire to those to achieve cohesive, motivated and successful teams that consistently deliver business results
  • Successful experience in identifying and securing enduring funding streams
  • Highly confident and capable in establishing a positive and professional public image of a business and/or sporting code
  • Well-developed and proven written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to establish credibility, confidence and trust with key business stakeholders
  • Preferably has a strong affinity with rugby as a sport and a product
  • Proven success in media relationships

The WBRU Board invites applications for the position of Head Coach to the Trust House Wairarapa Bush Heartland team for 2015. The successful candidate will have a strong rugby
coaching background and a proven record in creating a winning culture. The Wairarapa has a passionate and talented pool of players and coaches. The Heartland Coach will need to identify and develop programs for our players, work closely with our club coaches to ensure the individual performance of the players and the collective Heartland team performs at the highest level consistently.

Waikato ITM Cup - Head Coach

Waikato Rugby Union - one of New Zealand's leading rugby unions - is now seeking applicants for a head coach to lead the ITM Cup team in the national provincial competition.

The Waikato ITM Cup Head Coach is responsible for:

  • Coaching and leading the Waikato team in the ITM Cup Premiership.
  • Supporting Waikato ITM Cup players, and other identified players, in their tactical and technical development to achieve their potential on and off the field.
  • Developing and monitoring players to ensure they are prepared for the physical and mental demands of the premier national competition.

Applicants must have:

  • Experience in staff leadership, management and development.
  • Excellent communication skills (Verbal, Written & Presenting).
  • Excellent mentoring/coaching skills.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the game of rugby and overall player development.
  • A high level of understanding of learning processes and various coaching methods. 
  • A proven record of coaching results and achievement.
  • The ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • The ability to work competently as a member of the team.
  • The ability to genuinely attempt to resolve conflicts when they arise.
  • A logical, structured approach to planning and completing workload.
  • The ability to operate at a strategic as well as operational level.
  • A current NZRU/IRB Coaching L3 (minimum).

Wellington Lions Head Coach

Wellington Rugby is seeking applications for the role of Head Coach of the Ricoh Wellington Lions in the ITM Cup. Wellington has a proud tradition of success in New Zealand provincial rugby competitions as well as identifying and developing player talent.

The successful candidate will have outstanding leadership and people management skills, effective talent identification and development systems, and the ability to build strong relationships based on mutual respect and trust with all key stakeholders. You will coach the team on and off the field to a standard of excellence that enhances the reputation of the Lions, Wellington Rugby and the ITM Cup competition.

Suitable candidates will ideally have;

  • prior experience as the Coach, Assistant Coach, Technical Advisor or Specialist Coach of a New Zealand Investec Super Rugby, ITM Cup or NZRU National Team (or overseas equivalent competition or team); or
  • other significant coaching experience that demonstrates their suitability for the role.

 This is an outstanding opportunity to play a key role in the development of rugby in Wellington.
