Taking a stand against violence

New Zealand’s rates of domestic abuse are among the highest in the developed world and, while this issue is not specific to rugby, rugby can be a vehicle for change.

NZR Culture, Diversity & Inclusion Manager Judy O’Brien believes every child has unlimited potential and that parents, coaches, teachers, volunteers, supporters, and teammates can help protect that potential.  

“We want to make it clear that the rates of family violence in New Zealand are not acceptable, that we can do something about it, and that it’s ok to ask for help” said O’Brien.

The campaign features Black Ferns, All Blacks, and members of the rugby community.  Subject matter experts on domestic violence were consulted in the campaign development, and staff training. Shine DVFREE Lead and Senior Trainer Mira Taitz said family and domestic violence impact all communities.  

“It’s great to see New Zealand Rugby working to raise awareness on the issue of family and domestic violence,” Taitz said. 
Shine’s annual fundraiser Light it Orange runs from the 10th-16th June to raise awareness of the issue and support Shine’s frontline services which help people experiencing family violence to become safer (Let’s Light it Orange and help stop the violence, Aotearoa!)
