Concussion Education

Clubs play a vital role in promoting concussion awareness and implementing best practices for concussion management. The training modules have been designed for the community rugby setting.

Courses

  • Concussion module: Recognise & Remove in Community Rugby

This module focuses on identifying concussions and taking immediate action. Concussions aren’t always as visible as other injuries, but they require just as much attention. By completing this module, you’ll learn what concussion is, its impact on the body, key symptoms, and the 4R’s of concussion management. Most importantly, you’ll understand why removing a player from the field is critical for their safety.

  • Concussion module: Recover & Return in Community Rugby

Once a concussion occurs, safe recovery is essential. This module outlines the Graduated Return to Play (GRTP) process, including the mandatory 21-day stand-down period. You'll learn why gradual progression and symptom monitoring are vital to a player’s recovery and how to support them through each stage. We recommend completing the Recognise & Remove module first for full context.

Concussion Discussion

We want to ensure that anyone involved in rugby - players, coaches, referees, supporters, whānau and families - know what to look out for and what to do when they suspect a player has sustained a concussion.

We all have a role to play in recognising, removing, supporting recovery, and ensuring a safe return to play when managing concussion.
