Mind Set Engage is a key initiative supporting mental wellbeing across the rugby community, and its presence on referee uniforms reflects NZR’s ongoing commitment to promoting positive mental health at every level of the game. Referees play an essential role in our sport, and this partnership highlights the importance of supporting the people who keep rugby moving, on and off the field.
Referee Ben O’Keeffe says the visibility of Mind Set Engage during Super Rugby Pacific fixtures will help reinforce the message that mental wellbeing is a core part of rugby’s culture. “Mental wellbeing matters, and we’re proud to elevate this message on one of rugby’s biggest stages”, O’Keeffe says.
“Talking about feelings has always been a bit of a stigma or just hasn’t been well received or accepted. We can be quite proud and try to keep things to ourselves. Sometimes people think it’s a sign of weakness, but it’s actually a sign of strength and the only way I’ve seen those people or myself go forward is by being open and talking about it.”
“As an ambassador for Mind Set Engage, I’ve seen how the programme supports people in our communities and helps reduce stigma by encouraging conversations and help-seeking. That’s great for rugby, great for referees and great for everyone watching.”
The initiative builds on NZR’s wider wellbeing strategy, which includes education, resources, and support for players, coaches, referees, volunteers, and communities across New Zealand.
“I’m really excited to have the Mind Set Engage logo on my sleeve as I referee each game this Super Rugby season. Being able to promote mental health in such a visible way is powerful - it’s a reminder that support and resources are available, and that no one has to deal with things on their own.
