The stage is set for a thrilling showdown as High School Old Boys (HSOB) Light Bears (Canterbury) and Pōneke Wanderers (Wellington) prepare to clash in the New Zealand U85kg National Club Cup Final.
For HSOB, this marks their third consecutive final appearance, a testament to their skill. After lifting the trophy in 2023 with a win over Takapuna, they suffered heartbreak in 2024, falling just short to Pakuranga by a single point in the final minutes. This year, they return with vengeance on their minds and seven players who toured Sri Lanka this year as part of our national U85kg team - the most of any team in the competition.
Pōneke, meanwhile, have a point to prove. After falling in the quarterfinals last year to eventual champions Pakuranga, they’ve stormed into their first-ever final, toppling the champions of both the North Harbour and Auckland competitions, widely considered the strongest sides in the northern region. The team is packed with rising talent eager to make their mark on the big stage.
Adding to the occasion, Eden Park will host the final - a first for both teams. The match also marks the first-ever meeting between HSOB and Pōneke, setting the scene for a fresh rivalry built on flair, speed, and eyes-up rugby. Both sides are composite teams, drawing players from premier and age-restricted grades rather than dedicated U85kg competitions, showcasing the depth and diversity of grassroots rugby.
With history on one side and momentum on the other, fans can expect a fast-paced, high-skill contest that celebrates everything the U85kg grade stands for: heart, hustle, and pure rugby passion.
