The Ako Wāhine programme is a coaching course specifically designed for women who are new to coaching, in their first year of coaching, or looking to upskill at a foundational level. No previous coaching experience is required. The content is based on World Rugby and New Zealand Rugby’s Foundation Level 1.
The Ako Wāhine programme – is a womens-focused initiative designed to introduce and support women in their journey of learning. A key focus of Ako Wāhine is creating an enhanced, women’s centered learning environment that supports connection, whakawhanaungataga, growth and confidence. A childminding service is provided to ensure accessibility and flexibility. Participants learn alongside others on a similar journey, supported by experienced facilitators and a strong peer network that extends beyond the workshop – more than a course.
The 2026 Ako Wāhine programme focus is the The Foundation of Rugby Coaching Course Level 1, aligned with NZ Rugby and World Rugby standards. It is the introduction to coaching delivered through a blended learning approach of online modules and in-person workshops. Whether you are new to coaching, in your first season or looking to strengthen your foundational skills, this programme provides a welcoming entry point into coaching rugby.
On completion, participants become accredited NZ Rugby and World Rugby Level 1 coaches, ready to continue their coaching journey with confidence.
More than a course – Ako Wāhine is a connected journey of learning. Our purpose is to recruit, retain and celebrate women in coaching by creating supportive environments and building lasting networks within rugby.
