Puberty

What to Expect & Why It Matters in Rugby:

Puberty is a natural stage of growth preparing wāhine for adulthood. Changes in body and mind bring new experiences that affect how a person moves, feels, and performs in sport. Physical changes like breast development, starting periods, and growth in height and weight occur alongside possible changes in strength, flexibility, coordination, and confidence. These changes happen at different times and speeds for everyone and are all completely normal. Rapid growth can affect balance, coordination, and injury risk, especially in the knees and ankles, while hormonal shifts may influence mood, energy levels, and recovery.

Signs You Might Notice:

  • Feeling clumsy or uncoordinated.
  • Mood or motivation changes.
  • Increased fatigue or soreness.
  • Growth spurts.
  • Feeling self-conscious during training or games.

For Coaches, Managers & Teammates:

  • Promote a positive, supportive team environment (whakawhanaungatanga).
  • Avoid comments about changing bodies, even in 'fun'.
  • Adapt training when needed during growth or emotional changes.
  • Encourage open kōrero (conversation) about experiences.
  • Have a nominated safe and approachable wāhine available for support (This person doesn’t need to be the coach).

This is general guidance only. Players should seek medical advice if they have any health concerns.
